Summer of Maker 2016 Workshop Descriptions

Below is a description of each of the workshops offered as part of The Maker Mill Summer of Makers. The workshops are listed in alphabetical order with recommended age groups based on the 2016/2017 school year.  Please feel free to contact us at hollie@themakermill.com if you have any questions regarding one of our sessions.

3D Printing & Design (3rd+): Learn to use a variety of 3D design tools to craft and print 3D objects on one of our many 3D printers. This workshop builds on several designs from day to day.  This workshop builds each day allowing students to create a final 3D printed project. Please choose concurrent days when selecting this workshop each project starts on Monday and builds off of the prior day’s knowledge and design.

Advanced Minecrafting (3rd+ with Minecraft PC skills and prior experience): Build your Minecraft skills in this advanced crafting class. We'll explore redstone and a variety of techniques for improving your development.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Animatronics (4th-8th): Learn how to bring objects to life through the power of animatronics.  This weeklong workshop will teach you about Animatronics so you can build the scariest Halloween display this year, or just learn about how to automate robots.  Come join The Maker Mill in this exciting new summer program.  We will also be designing Grave Stones with a router and foam cutter.  Please choose concurrent days when selecting this workshop each project starts on Monday and builds off of the prior day’s knowledge and design.

Battlebots Challenge (3th-8th): This fun workshop is meant to explore a variety of robot concepts including motors, sensors, design and control.  During this full-week workshop participants will build an end to end robot from the ground up while also developing skills in coding. Several robotics platforms will be explored including LEGO Mindstorms & Vex.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Beginner Stop Motion (K-2nd): Beginning, Action, Middle, Climax, End...Those are the parts of a story students will learn and use as they develop a full stop motion short movie.  These fun and highly interactive sessions teach kids to work together and collaborate as they develop the next stop motion hit movie. The children will be designing the set for their hit movie & using clay, Star Wars figures/ships, Lego’s and much more.  The movies will be loaded onto our Facebook page for viewing with family and friends. (If Class Precedes with Fun with Clay we will use our homemade objects in the movie)

Build Your Own Marshmallow Launcher (All Ages): Get your Lung Power Ready for this awesome class.  Enjoy the weird physics of the marshmallow launcher, as you design and create your own using PVC pipe.  Surprisingly, no matter how you build your design the marshmallow always finds through the curves of your design.

Code Camp (3rd+ with Scratch experience): This workshop will improve your prior coding skills by introducing techniques for game development, storytelling and application design.  Prior experience with Scratch and proficiency with mouse and keyboard is required.  This workshop will use Python and Java so typing is a must!

DI Challenges (All Ages):  We will work as teams and individually to solve multiple challenges, which include challenging the teacher and other classmates.  This workshop will involve critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity.  Each group will have to explain to the class their answer to the problem and how they came to solve it.

Engineering Mix & Match Week (All Ages): Feel free to join in any day of the week, we will be mixing up activities and starting something new every day.  This workshop will include Monday: MIP Racetrack Creation & Race, Tuesday: Recyclable City Building, Wednesday: Sink or Float Lego Creations, Thursday: Create a Race Car, Friday: Rocket Building and Launch.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.  Rockets will be launch outside in the adjacent field on Fridays unless rain is forecasted, then it will be moved up to Thursday. 

Forensic Science (4th – 8th): Do you love mysteries? Have you ever wanted to learn the tips and tricks to solving a crime? Finger printing, Chromatography experiments, hair analysis and analyzing a crime scene.  Then jump onboard this is the class for you.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Fun with Clay (K-6th): Lets mold and have some fun in a class that will make multiple creations to take home and show off.  We will make monsters, leaf ornaments, butterflies and other great trinkets in this 5 Day Class.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.  Feel free to join in any day, but note that Friday we will be painting the objects we have made during the week.

Game Design Fundamentals with Scratch & GameLooper (4th+):  This introductory workshop will teach participants about what makes a great game and the variety of tools and techniques needed to develop a modern PC, phone or tablet game.  GameLooper is a drag & drop 2D mobile game development tool, with permission the kids can send the finished game to their mobile device. Please choose concurrent days when selecting this workshop each project starts on Monday and builds off of the prior day’s knowledge and design.

Introduction to LEGO Robotics (K-4th): This is a great workshop for learning about basic robots and how to control them through software.  Participants will build several LEGO robot creations and then bring their creations to life by creating basic interactions through the LEGO WeDo application.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Learn to Code Camp (3rd+): This introductory coding camp is a perfect summer workshop for learning to develop your first computer programs.  Kids will get a first-hand look at various coding concepts such as variables, if...then...else, loops and more.  Students will create several fun interactive applications they will bring home to continue their coding journey.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Learn to Laser Project (4th - 8th): During this week long workshop we'll be designing a variety of fun laser creations from simple boxes to puzzles and 3 dimensional objects all using a laser cutter.  Participants will get a hands-on experience designing their own work and then outputting to The Maker Mill 60 Watt laser. Each student will get to bring their creation home at the end of the class.  Please choose concurrent days when selecting this workshop each project starts on Monday and builds off of the prior day’s knowledge and design.

Learn to Sketch (All Ages): Sketching is important to designers, artists and entrepreneurs as a way to express ideas and thoughts.  This hands-on learning workshop will teach basic sketching skills and start students on an important journey of expression. Students will start a new project each day and will be using tools such as Osmo, Zen Tangles, Shrinky Dink material and more.  Feel free to pop in any day.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Lego Contraptions (All Ages): “Let’s Get to Building” In this class we will be building a new contraption every day so join in anytime.  Some of our projects include the Beaker Blender 3000, Annoy-O-Matic, Squeezeclaw Grabber, Supercharged Speedster, Art-A-Maton and the LEGO Launcher. Our LEGO Engineers will develop several new skills which include learning the Engineering Design Process and how to use simple machines. If you love LEGO building than this is the class for you.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Minecraft Tournament (3rd+): Need we say more?  Come craft with your friends in our multiplayer server environments as we lead you through a variety of challenges and worlds.  There will be loads of surprises from never before seen worlds to team challenges with dynamite.  We will crown a tournament winner at the end of each class week, and the grand prize will be a free Saturday morning Minecraft class. Minecraft Builder Club (All Ages): Never played Minecraft on a PC?  Need to build your skills in certain areas?  This is a great session to join to work with one of our Minecraft experts as we challenge you to build new worlds and creations on one of our 4 multiplayer server environments.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Mod Building for Minecraft (4th - 8th): Mods are a great way to advance your Minecraft skills and add new features to the growing list of Minecraft tools.  You must have existing coding experience with Python, Java or other type based coding language.  Please choose concurrent days when selecting this workshop each project starts on Monday and builds off of the prior day’s knowledge and design.

Optical Illusions & Magic (3rd - 8th): Students will have a great time experimenting with all sorts of magic tricks.  We will learn a little about the history of magic and learn tricks using cards, string, balloons and more. They will have so much fun coming home and using their new talents on family and friends. We will have a magic show on Friday to show our new skills.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Photography (3rd+): Do you have a budding photographer that enjoys snapping shots on their phone or tablet?  This fun workshop teaches kids how to plan a shot, understand basic composition, the rule of 3 and lighting while capturing scenes created with LEGO, shadows and many different lenses.   Please choose concurrent days when selecting this workshop each project starts on Monday and builds off of the prior day’s knowledge.

Scratch Coding for Kids (All Ages): Never coded?  No problem.  This early learner Scratch coding session will introduce kids to the basics of building basic interactions through code. We'll explore storytelling through simple coding exercises in Scratch.   We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Soldering & Circuits with Arduino & Raspberry Pi (4th - 8th): Developing your knowledge of circuits, microcontrollers and soldering all through a fun workshop session.  Each day students will learn new ways to develop electronics from prototyping to final soldering. Please choose concurrent days when selecting this workshop each project starts on Monday and builds off of the prior day’s knowledge and design.

Summer Sewing (All Ages):  Do you kids like to Sew or have they always been interested in learning?  Then this is the workshop for them.  In this workshop they will learn to make wonderful creations that they get to take home.  Make a custom pillowcase and then Tie Die it outside in the courtyard with wonderful colors, create custom head bands and flowing skirts.

T-Shirt Design & Creation (All Ages): Let’s get designing in this 3-hour workshop.  Each child will get white t-shirt which they will use to create the ultimate fashion piece.  We will use our custom shirt press and spray painter to transform the shirt into a special summer keepsake after we draw out and plan our designs.

The Art of Balloon Twisting (All Ages):  Have you ever wanted to learn how to make balloon animals, swords and hats?  Than this is the class for you, join us for 3 hours of balloon twisting & Design.  We will also work on our drawing skills as we prepare to make our designs come to life.

The Art of Flight (K-3rd): In this class you will learn about flying using many techniques, and together we will create a working diamond kite for you to fly at home.  Other activities include exploring a wind tunnel, paper airplanes and a few other flying machines.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

The Science of Eggs (K-3rd): Let’s experiment with eggs in this fun and exciting workshop.  We will be conduction experiments such as the egg drop, the rubber egg, egg in a bottle trick and walking on eggs, we will have an eggcellent time experimenting.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Weird Science with Candy Experiments (K-4th): Weird Science with Candy Experiments (K-4th): Do your kids love science and candy? We won't be eating any candy in this workshop we'll be exploring all the weird & wondrous things about it.  Candy is more than a sugary snack. With candy, you can become a scientific detective. We will test candy for secret ingredients, peel the skin off candy corn, float M&M's and taffy, turn candy into crystals and much more! Kids will also be exploring with slides with a microscope.   We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

What’s Inside My Xbox “Tear-It-Down” (4th - 8th):  Let’s take things apart and see what’s inside during this week long Hackathon. Tear-It-Down invites kids & teens to explore how things are made, identify components that make things work by tearing them apart.  Join in any day of the week we will be starting a new projects every day.  If you have an old component at home ex. An old game controller bring it in and we will help take it apart.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.

Young M.C. Escher (K-4th): where art meets math. In this class the kids will explore the beautiful art of M.C. Escher and learn about tiling of a plane, construction with pencil and ruler, 2-d work with pencil and with watercolors.  We start a new project every day so feel free to jump in any day of the week.
